To do the right thing


Today we read Luke 10:38-42. The text  made me think about priorities.
Elisabeth of Trinity, I wrote about in  a previous post  decided to become a Carmelitan nun.
Märta in Sweden did the same 1998 . She was 19 when she made this decision. A Swedish documentary at  tells about her. She is today  happy with her decision 20 years ago, still happily active in a Swedish Carmelitan monastery.
Other youth want to become bosses,  drug dealers or soccer champions. Most of them want to become rich. 
We all make priorities and decision in our lives. 
The Luke Gospel text today is about what makes you happy and feel good. The  meaning of life we have is important.  I wrote about meaning of life in a previous post.

Luke 10:38-42

Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper and said, “Look after him, and on my way back I willmake good any extra expense you have.” Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the bandits’ hands?’

 He replied, ‘The one who showed pity towards him.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go, and do the same yourself.’

 In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking.

Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’
 But the Lord answered, ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said, ‘you worry and fret about so many things,

The Silence on Lipari

Inspired by a article from La Republica Dossier 13/7 2019, I decided to create this page with my English translation of parts of this article.

Outside the village, on the island during trekking tours, you can experience a beautiful silence with many nice places for yoga meditation.




Elisabeth of trinity about silence

I read years ago about Silence and the importance of it in Andliga skrifter” page 122 from Elisabeth of Trinity a Carmelitan sister living in France at the end of Ninetheenth century. It is remarcable that this sister, who was a talented pianist as a young girl became the “Messenger of the Silence”.

Her vocation was simply prayer, silence, and suffering, “because our Lord lives in our soul, His prayer dwells within us and it is there I want to abide without ceasing, as a little vase at the source and fountain of life” 

“Prayer, solitude, praise of glory, silence of the mind and heart are, as many biblical values, dear to Eastern Monasticism, and they culminate in “Esychia” (hence hesychism), that is interior quietude and serenity of the soul which has emigrated to God and found its peace in Him

To be with God, Elizabeth sought silence and solitude. “

Sufi about silence

Sufi ask you to listen. But they really do not request silence to hear the voice as Rumi said. Maybe it is more about a inner silence, because music is part of Sufi spiritual meditation.


Silence in churches

I look for silence now and then in churches. But most Lutheran churches in Sweden are closed when there is no mass. When I were in Visby I found however the Dome open. This is a video of its interior. Raise the volume and listen if you hear something. Do not worry. No stupid sound jokes.



Science about Silence

The importance of Silence is now more and more recognized scientifically.

On my trip to göteborg last week I found a article in Swedish about Silence in the train Magazine by Erica  Jakobson with the title

 Erica informs in her article about recent research about silence.

  1. Two hours silence each day hel develop nerve cells in Hypocampus, the part of the brain that deals with memories, feelings and learning. This is the conclusion of a American research goroup after experimens with adult mice exposed to noice and silence.
  2. Another study organized by WHO and the EU-commission has found that lo levels of noice increases stress hormone levels,  decreased learning hability and even hearth failure.

Victoria Palm grounder of OAS says :

“We know that people restore while sleeping but never thinks about relax during the day. In a world where we are constantly exposed to stimuli, is it impossible for the brain to restore energy.

I were surprised that there were department in the train wagons were people are informed that it is a silent department.


A italian article about silence translated

The World Health Organization has defined noise pollution a “modern plague” because “there is indisputable evidence that exposure to environmental noise has negative effects on the health of the population”.

The human being needs silence to live well. Silence has become a rarity tin our increasingly noisy  cities. In the Western world we run away from the noise ,wearing a noise canceling headphones or participating at yoga meditation sessions. 

In India,  the population went to the streets to demand the right to silence, against honking cars and motorbikes. 

Meanwhile, the technology is studying and putting devices on the market to soundproof environments taking advantage of the wireless vibration, but also bracelets that replicate the heartbeat to remove stress from the brain, caused by the surrounding noise. 

A ingenious publicity tourism office in Finland to attract tourists to Finland with slogans about silence, depicting views of unspoiled nature. It is the same principle that inspired the Benedictine monks of Pluscarden Abbey, Scotland, to open the doors of the convent, which dates from the thirteenth century, to anyone who wants to spend a few nights (or months) in complete tranquility.

ALESSANDRA FRIGERIO, PSYCHOLOGIST WITH a PhD in cognitive and clinical social psychology, is a professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca and the Sigmund Freud University. Repubblica asked her:
“In the hyper-connected world and in the noisy society we live in, is there really an increased demand for silence?”
ALESSANDRA: “There is a high quest to get to silence. These requests are answered, for example  in meditation classes, yoga retreats, relaxing drive.”
“However, there are ways to live the silence, that allow access to its own needs through structures and standardized methodologies, like e.g. silent fast food.”

What can  silence be?

!People often perceive it is repressed by silence, because silence can represent a heavy experience.  Be in silence means dealing with an apparent void, with a series of enigmatic aspects of unresolved questions.  Our tendency is therefore  to fill the silence with noise (ed. music e.g. in stores, bars or on the beach) or repetitive meaningless talking. Silence confront us with the limits of language. It is the space of the unspoken, what we fail to express with words.!”

Effects on mental well-being

Silence in clinical practice 

Silence for a psychologist or a psychoanalyst is an integral part of the instrumentation. The therapist is mostly silent because it leaves the patient an area of ​​freedom. Thus permitting a chain of speeches, to get rid of the words, beyond the constraints of consistency, morality, rational logic. The silent listening allows the patient to be a able auto-listener, grasping the implications of his own words. Sometimes the analyst’s silence is for those who do not an”swers at  a patient’s questions. It does so because it avoids influencing the individual with his judgment and to avoid being pedagogical. Silence, in this case, is to return the patient’s own question,  to find the best solution.

Silent zones in India. 

India has  silent zones that are comparable to the C zones in the center of Milan that prohibit cars to circulate. The difference is that in India  the traffic ban was not raised against smog and air pollution, but against noise. 
It all started a few years ago in the chaotic Mumbai, where a group of activists began to demonstrate for the right to peace. The reason is that the average decibel level in Mumbai is more than 80, while the World Health Organization indicates it should not exceed the maximum threshold of 65 decibels by day and 40 at night.

So the Mumbai High Court ruled the noise absolute prohibition in a radius of at least 100 meters around hospitals, schools, courts, parks, public buildings, libraries and universities.

Silence on the island of Lipari

The silence has partly abandoned Lipari. Donkeys have disappeared and cars and motorbikes have take over on the roads. Police does not care about the noice that some cause with their scooters and mototìrbykes. Happily July is the month of silence. You are not allowed to run building machines during that month probably to protect the tourists that come to the island on that month. But for those that are unlucky to live in the village near a bar you may not be able to sleep at all from the evening at 10, until morning at 4-5 the next day. The night,  summer time is party time on Lipari with musicians playing all the evenings, a Eden for youth that prefer to sleep during the day. 

But there are many opportunities to enjoy silence on the island anyway.  In the early mornings or if you make trekking in the valleys you find a incredibly relaxing silence.

If you come to Lipari and you want silence, I recommend not to stay in the village of Lipari in July and August but instead find rooms outside like in the smaller villages like Pianoconte, Quattropani or Acquacalda. E.g. hotel Cutimare in Acquacalda on the north part of the Island is probably a  good choice. there is only one road that has little or no traffic, one little bar and at a distance, one restaurant.



I definitively prefer to live on Lipari. Fortunenately my house is outside the village so I really enjoy the dark and silent nights and the early silent mornings. Sometimes there are dogs barking. But I can stand that.



Update all senses

I loved the article “Il faticoso aggiornamento dell’Homo Tecnologicus” in English “The arduous update of Homo Tecnologicus” written by Stefano Massini Repubblica June 22. This is my translation of part of it.

A few hours are required to update a computer’s software. Let’s not talk about smartphones: just a few minutes. It is a pity that it does not work for the human beings. 

The update (understood as a new tuning in to reality, correcting errors and alleged dogmas) costs the children of Adam time and effort. fvar more than just a click. 

The technological devices do not have psychologies, and as such do not resist updating in the motivation “my convictions may be wrong but they are part of me”.

So we are all backward, stuck in the past, encrusted in a block of certainties that we conceive as one with our identity. 

…. There is no operating system that does not end up crashing without the periodic update: what causes the so-called crash is the fact that the machine no longer dialogues with the outside, the files are missing, it does not recognize the languages.  In the end it is the same thing that happens to the Homo Sapiens Tecnologicus: closing the mind to external stimuli means neither more nor less isolating oneself. “

The Science and story about infidelity


I stumbled upon this Ted. The issue has touched human beings for millennia and still does. A lot of humans  have been stoned for that.( John 8:11 )  The issue is still intresting for many in the 21th century . This is evident as this  Ted has been seen 5 139 925 times since it first was held in 2015. I think the issue is intresting, as it is about human beings behaviours, about love and being or not being kind issues I have dedicate time to before.

There is a Swedish way of describing marriage “Marriage is the first step toward divorce”. I personally went to a marriage preparing  Catholic course.  There we met a couple who have lived together for about 40 years and still loved each other. how is that possible? I unfortennately lost all the notes I made there. And what kind of love did they lived in?  We never got an answer to that question.

And what is to love someone? is to get in love like in a  Freudian psychosis? This video raises many questions I have not seen any Ted about.

Impulse allergy

This name was mentioned in the Swedish news telling about the importance of tranquillity in the classroom for children with ADD. 

The School minister was invited to a test in a room full of noice and visual impressions. He had to solve a few issues there. 

Unconsciousness and early life traumas.

Anil Vithanage a good friend of mine teached me once about the unconscious, how important it is to light on it to become a free and happy human being. Uncosnsciousness is an important factor to consider when you walk the buddhist eightfold path to

How many people do not go and have early life trauma deep in their unconscious? Look at all those uffering souls who experienced war traumas or had to leave good friends and relatives. I am thinking about all my former pupils from Iraq, Syria and other war zones. I were impressed by Julie Yau’s lecture about traumas in her vebinar at 

I talked with a good friend and pscyhoterapist who confirm she follows good psychoterapy practices.

Ett annorlunda arbetssätt

Några strävansmål i kursplanen för svenska och SO sammanfattar vad jag tycker att min undervisning skall leda till:

  • lust att lära och skapa
  • och att fÃ¥ eleven att aktivt delta i samhällsliv och samhällsutveckling samt ta ansvar för livsmiljön

Vi har samtidigt mÃ¥l som eleven skall uppnÃ¥ i slutet av Ã¥rskurs fem och nio, mÃ¥l som i Ã¥rkurs Ã¥tta och nio är knutna till betyg och som pga sin natur, ändrar undervisningens karaktär frÃ¥n nÃ¥got som borde vara “lustfyllt” till nÃ¥got som istället blir “ett mÃ¥ste”. Det som driver eleven att lära och skapa är inte längre “lusten att lära och skapa” utan “kraven att lära och skapa”, mÃ¥len som mÃ¥ste uppnÃ¥s. Lust och mÃ¥sten passar inte ihop.

Jag har nu i cirka åtta år haft ett stort fokus på målen, att försöka få eleverna att uppnå dessa. Jag har satt målen i elevernas händer tidigt från årskurs sju och med dessa i hand har jag anpassat min undervisning och försökt med nya mät- och bedömnings-redskap. Trots att jag har tolkat målen mycket välvilligt till elevernas fördel och att mina krav alltid varit transparanta med kända frågor och svar, så är elevernas resultat mycket dåliga. En alldeles för hög andel av mina elever i NO och matematik är inte godkända så som jag tolkar målen i dessa ämnen.

Det är viktigt att vi är ärliga med vÃ¥ra intentioner och att vi är tydliga i vÃ¥ra bedömningar och betyg. Men samtidigt skapar mÃ¥len en stress och pga dess omfattning, i mÃ¥nga fall en uppgivenhet. Jag tror att speciellt matematikmÃ¥len för VG och MVG har ändrat min undervisning i positiv riktning för eleverna tycker mycket om att diskutera olika lösningar. Men överlag känner jag att “lusten att lära och skapa” saknas hos allt för mÃ¥nga av mina elever. Därför vill jag med en ny Ã¥rgÃ¥ng elever, pröva pÃ¥ nÃ¥got nytt.

Frihet att kr…itisera!

Idag läste jag en artikel i Svenska Dagbladet av Per Bauhn, professor i praktisk filosofi på högskolan i Kalmar. Under titeln "Religiöst tabu får kränkas" i Brännpunkt jämför Per Bauhn, Wilks kränkning med ärekränkning. Om Wilks teckningar säger han att

"Det är inte att jämföra med att till exempel på internet sprida ett falskt rykte  om en person att han är en pedofil. En sådan ryktesspridning skadar personen oavsett om han vet om att ryktet sprids eller inte. Men närmast de omvända gäller för en person som menar sid skadad  av att någon utmanat hennes religion. Här finns ingen skada oberoende av vad offret själv tror. Vi kan här tala om övertygelseskada, en sorts negativ placeboeffekt. Man upplever en skada därför att man identifierar sig med en övertygelse som säger att man bör känna sig kränkt av vad andra säger och gör." (klicka här för hela artikeln)

Man måste skilja mellan att

  • någon med avsikt kränker en person
  • någon känner sig kränkt

Någon kan nämligen känna sig kränkt utan att den som kränkt haft för avsikt att kränka.

Det är enligt svensk lag straffbart att sprida falska rykten om människor. Vi kallar det för ärekränkning och kan ta upp sådana fall i domstol. Men att sprida ett falskt rykte om en död människa finns det ingen lag för eller? Vi har en lag som förbjuder kränkning av avlidnas kroppar och skändning av gravar (griftesfriden). Men inget hindrar från att förtala den avlidne, i det här fallet Mohammed. Men återigen, vad rättfärdigar en sådan kränkning?

Mohammed får enligt Islam inte avbildas. Att avbilda Mohammed är förbjudet för muslimer. Ett liknande förbud gäller egentligen även för kristna. Andra Mosebok 20:2-6 lyder:
Jag är Herren, din Gud, som förde dig ut ur Egypten, ut ur slavlägret. Du skall inte ha andra gudar vid sidan av mig. Du skall inte göra dig någon bildstod eller avbild av någonting uppe i himlen eller nere på jorden eller i vattnet under jorden." Men detta gäller de troende. Muslimer skall inte avbilda Gud, Jesus och de andra profeterna. Kristna skall inte avbilda Gud. Men om andra avbildar Gud eller profeterna måste vi acceptera det. Det har gjorts många gånger genom historien. Se t ex Dantes berättelse om Mohammed i helvetet och alla de illustrationer av Mohammed som gjorts i Inferno-boken.

Men om avsikten med bilderna är att avsiktligt kränka profeterna, är situationen en annan. Ingenting rättfärdigar nidbilder av Gud eller profeter. Om det hade varit fråga om nya nidbilder av t ex vår Anna Lindh eller Olof Palme hade vi nog sett det som mycket osmakligt. Att Mohammed levde för 1500 år sedan och att det idag inte finns nära anhöriga, gör inte dessa nidbilder mindre osmakliga. För muslimerna är nämligen Mohammeds liv och bortgång lika nära som Anna Lindhs. Liksom kristna skulle protestera mot kränkning av kristna religiösa ledare, då måste vi vara så pass empatiska att vi förstår muslimernas protester, i det senaste fallet mot Wilks nidbild av Mohammed som rondellhund. Vi har religionsfrihet och detta tolkar jag som frihet att utöva min religion utan att andra försvårar mitt utövande genom avsiktliga kränkningar.

Om man t ex tittar på Dantes berättelse av Mohammed så var Dantes avsikt inte att kränka. Dante kritiserade Mohammed. Denna kritik i form av Mohammed placerad i helvetet har därför illustrerats i bild och film. Se länken ovan. Denna Dantes kritik får muslimerna acceptera. Givetvis får de undvika att se på illustrationerna om dessa skulle upplevas som sårande. De skall veta att Dante-bilderna var gjorda av "icke troende" och att syftet inte var att såra.

Som Per Bauhn skriver i artikeln "De som nu protesterar i den islamiska upprördhetens namn bör vara medvetna om att de kan göra detta endast i skydd av samma sekulära yttrandefrihet som de vill begränsa. På den tiden när vårt land hade lagar mot hädelse av det slag som åtminstone vissa grupper av muslimer vill ha idag, så fanns heller inget utrymme för muslimska minoriteter att kräva en rätt till särkilda hänsyn.

Men yttrandefriheten är inte densamma som rätten att kränka.
