11. Nazareth of Jesus

Introduction

February 2 the Catholic Mass read Luke 4:21-30 Being in Nazaret hi hometown Jesus talked among others about being prophet in his own hometown. Luke most probably never was in Nazaret. I will in this post share facts about Nazareth

Lukes description

Jeuss told about “Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land” Luke 4:25

Luke dedscribes what happened after his speech in Luke 4:28-30:

“28 When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged. 29 They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff, 30 but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.

Nazareth

Nazaret is described by Luke as a town with a Synagogue like this one in Köln:

NB Jesus never talked about his town but his country (maybe intednded as Upper Galilee) in 4:24:

“24 And he went on, ‘In truth I tell you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.”

Nazaret was at the time of Jesus, a small village at jesus time with about 12 families, t or  200 inhabitants.

Conclusions

Luke did his best to draw a historical and geographical picture of Jesus, thinking that wass not so important . most important is the  message of Jesus. Luke never lived with Jesus nor knew about his youth. Here he reveals for the second time that he never were in Nazaret. The first time was when he in Luke 2:4 told that Mary went from Nazaret to Betlehem a few days before Jesus birth. Nazaret is about 80 chilometers away from Betlehem. Imagine your daughter jumping on a donkey even 1 chilometer. If Luke was a doctor as Paul mentioned him once , Luke was for sure no doctor knowing about pregnant womens.
